Awa Whakamate was designed by Melbourne based Maori artist Hamuera Rimene. Originally designed for a bridge in his home town in Aotearoa. This piece speaks to the importance of finding and implementing solutions to restore the heath to the Waipoua awa (river) after decades of toxic run off from agricultural pollution. This impacts the Mauri (spirit) that inhabits the wai (water), the surrounding whenua (land) and the inhabitants.
